Biography
Nicky Hannaway was invited to train with Clydebank during his last 6 months in under 21 football. He was a right midfielder who got three games in seven days trial run at the end of season 2005/06. His debut was on 3 May 2006 in a 2-2 draw away at Lesmahagow. Just two days later Bankies crashed to a 4-2 defeat at home to Thorniewood. Nicky’s last game of that season saw another home defeat this time to Cumbernauld. Despite this Nicky was offered a contract and signed up for season 2006/07.
He reported for pre-season training with lots of new signings battling for places. Nicky played in the pre-season friendlies against Renfrew and St. Andrews but found playing time hard to come by when the real games started. He asked the manager if he could move on as he wanted regular game time and he knew a number of clubs were interested in him. Budgie McGhie agreed to this and Nicky was released from his contract.
Nicky would go on to pick up a Central League Division 2 winners medal with Ashfield, and moved on to Maryhill, in the Super League Division 1 who at that time were about to implode as the money ran out. As the money went so did the manager and players.
Nicky signed on for John Brogan at Yoker and picked up a Second Central League Division 2 winners medal. Nicky spent three years at Yoker, but a broken leg and recurring injuries saw him lose his appetite for the game and he retired, aged 28.
One of Nicky’s memories of Clydebank was that whenever he came up against them with his ‘other’ sides, Budgie McGhie always made a point of coming over and saying hello to him and asking him how he was getting on, a touch of class.
One final story has to be told about Nicky Hannaway. Bert Trautmann the famous Manchester City goalkeeper played in the 1956 FA Cup Final against Birmingham with a broken neck. What you ask has this to do with Nicky Hannaway, well, when Nicky Hannaway was with Yoker, he was also doing some part time modelling work. He had to call off from a game because a razor fell on his foot !
