Match Report

Clydebank returned empty-handed from Barrowfield after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Celtic Reserves in a closely fought Combined Reserve League encounter.

The Bankies were beaten by a single second-half goal, but much of the credit for keeping the contest so close belonged to goalkeeper Ronnie Wilson, whose outstanding display prevented Celtic from winning by a more comfortable margin.

Both sides created opportunities during a lively first half, although neither could find the breakthrough. Celtic looked the more threatening of the two teams and repeatedly tested Wilson, who responded with a series of excellent saves to keep the scores level.

The Clydebank defence also played its part, frustrating several promising Celtic attacks and restricting the influence of creative players such as Sweeney, Taylor and Hay.

Despite the home side's pressure, the teams went in level at the interval.

The decisive moment arrived seven minutes after the restart. Clever approach play involving Sweeney and Taylor created the opening and McGowan finished the move with a well-placed right-foot shot beyond Wilson.

It proved to be the only occasion on which the Clydebank goalkeeper was beaten all afternoon.

Celtic continued to enjoy the greater share of possession and chances, but Wilson remained in inspired form. Earlier in the match he had produced notable saves from Connelly and McGowan, while the Clydebank rearguard repeatedly came to his assistance whenever the home side threatened to increase their lead.

The Bankies battled hard to find an equaliser but were unable to break down a well-organised Celtic side, who ultimately made their tactical advantage count.

In the end, a solitary goal separated the teams, although Clydebank could take encouragement from a disciplined defensive display and the excellent form of Wilson, who was comfortably the visitors' standout performer.
