Match Report

A Clydebank win at Albion Rovers yesterday, coupled with mostly favourable results elsewhere, means that for the first time in weeks we hold our destiny in our own hands. The margin of error is vanishingly small, and anything less than four victories from four in our remaining games may not be enough to lift the title.

For older Bankies fans, it was a trip down memory lane visiting Cliftonhill for the first time in 26 years. That previous visit came in a Challenge Cup first-round tie, when Tommy Coyne - then player-manager - scored the only goal in front of a paltry crowd of just 212.

Yesterday, well over double that attendance watched as the Bankies recorded a victory by an identical scoreline, thanks to Neil McLaughlin’s strike. He reacted quickest to slam the ball into the net after his penalty had been saved by Danny Gaffney.

It was also a third clean sheet in a row and a fifth straight victory - our best winning run of the season. If you want to be playing at the top of your game, this is the time to do it. With a strong wind at our backs in the first half, we carried on where we had left off in recent weeks.

The Bankies should really have had the game wrapped up by the interval, having registered ten shots in the opening twenty minutes alone. It culminated in McLaughlin’s goal after he was brought down in the box by Gaffney, following some unnecessary hesitation in the Rovers defence.

Prior to the goal, the Bankies should have been two or three up. The clearest chances fell to Keir Samson and Oisin McHugh. Samson pounced on a loose ball that had looped into the box, but his volley was blocked on the line. McHugh, from a similar position, was picked out by Samson, but on his weaker right foot his effort was also deflected away.

The Bankies lost a little momentum as half-time approached, but aside from a couple of poorly delivered corners, Stott was a virtual spectator.

On the resumption, Clydebank never quite regained their early dominance. Rovers, with the wind in their favour, were more dogged and made a clear effort to nullify Owen Wardell, who had caused problems in the first half.

Rovers even managed an effort on goal after 50 minutes, when Tylar Denholm sent a first-time volley wide from a Neeson cross. In truth, it was their only meaningful attempt of the entire match. But with so much on the line, there remained a sense of unease about the slender lead.

The middle spell of the second half brought Clydebank’s best chances to kill the game. Gaffney produced an excellent point-blank save from Samson after McHugh had nodded a Low cross back across goal. Low then saw a free kick from the edge of the box superbly tipped away, Gaffney diving full length to his right.

The final fifteen minutes offered little in the way of entertainment and were punctuated by a series of yellow cards. Gordon Moffat made a couple of tactical substitutions to keep Rovers’ late urgency in check, and the defence saw things out comfortably.

Clydebank have performed as well as could reasonably have been expected in recent weeks, and the second half here perhaps showed the first signs of a slight drop-off - understandable given the run. Overall, however, the three points were rarely in doubt, even if the scoreline suggests otherwise.

The Bankies’ early kick-off put pressure on the other title challengers, and both Bonnyrigg and Tranent dropped points, while Linlithgow Rose snatched a late winner to edge past bottom-of-the-table East Stirlingshire.

As mentioned at the outset, Clydebank can now win the title by taking maximum points from the remaining four games and no longer need to rely on favours elsewhere. The trip to Central Park to face Cowdenbeath on Wednesday offers the chance to go top for the first time since January - provided the Bankies take all three points.

There are undoubtedly further twists and turns to come in the run-in, with all four contenders facing potentially difficult fixtures. The landscape has shifted significantly after today’s results. At this stage, it is all about who can maintain their standards and hold their nerve. We can only hope that last season’s title success stands the Bankies in good stead.
