Match Report

Berwick Advertiser

It was Jim Hamilton's night at Kilbowie Park yesterday evening. Playing at centre-forward the young six-footer signed by Berwick from Dunbar United last season scored three goals to take the Rangers to a 4-2 victory over Clydebank. It was a sensational achievement by a team stricken by injuries.

Rangers took the field with a drastically depleted side. Unavailable to play because of injury were Doug Coutts, John Keith, Jack Smith, Mike Harris and John Brown leaving the Border side without a recognised centre half. Club physio- therapist Tom Logan filled the position for the first occasion in his time with Berwick.

Undeterred, the visitors met their hosts man for man and good individual raiding kept Clydebank 'keeper Madden busy in the early minutes.

The game continued to surge from end to end as the first period progressed and Clydebank with a good crowd of home supporters urging them on seemed likely to take control but the Berwick defence despite lacking its top men played with calm and authority and even managed to set their front men going on further occasions.

Half time came and went. Then Rangers moved into a one goal lead through Bowron but with 10 minutes of the second period gone Columbine, who played an outstanding game for Clydebank, pulled the Clydesiders back into the game. His goal was well taken..

Berwick were unimpressed and proceeded to take a further grip on the proceedings. Their lack of midfield superiority evident in earlier games this season was gone. Vint and Johnny Hamilton roamed everywhere spraying some fine passes forward. In addition for the first time for ever so long the forwards were finding each other and displaying confidence. It was after some fine interplay that Jim Hamilton scored his first. He followed it with a second shortly afterwards and although Clydebank made it three goals to two through Columbine. Berwick never looked back and before the end Hamilton had time to complete his hat trick and make Rangers' position unassailable.

It is unlikely Berwick will meet much stronger opposition than Clydebank in their remaining matches in League Cup Section six. If last night's improvement can be maintained a place in the quarter finals will not be the pipe dream it seemed at the start of the season.

Although yesterday evening's game played in perfect conditions, was obviously a triumph for the forwards the defence too must take credit for tightening up gaps that were getting alarmingly large against Darlington and Queen of the South. The back men made a good job of controlling Clydebank inside right Hawkshaw who was the most dangerous home forward.

Daily Record

Berwick started strongly, but their raids failed to payoff in terms of goals.

Bowron failed to first-time a scoring attempt and when Madden beat out the shot, Jimmy Hamilton couldn't control the ball and Collumbine rushed in to clear.

Four minutes after half-time Bowron put Berwick in front when he headed home a pass from the left only three yards from the goal line.

In the 66th minute Bankles equalised when skipper Ernie Columbine took a pass from McGunnigle to score.

But two minutes later Kennedy broke away down the right wing and put Rangers ahead again with a 25-yard shot.

Then Jim Hamilton scored two goals in as many minutes to make it 4-1. Collumbine snatched one back for Clydebank near the end.
