Joined Clydebank in 1967 from Glasgow University and morphed from a Bankies Babe to a Honey Monster. Arrived at Kilbowie with a lot of rough edges which were smoothed out over the years by Bill Munro’s coaching. Dennis was a competitive but headstrong big half back who did not take prisoners. He could be wild with his clearances and equally as wild with his tackling. He was no stranger to the referee’s black book and an early shower. Unfortunately some of these bookings owed more to his powerful appearance than any misdemeanour committed. In all seriousness ‘his look‘ was never a good look.
Dennis Ruddy made his breakthrough into the Clydebank side near the end of season 1967-68, when he played four matches and they were all lost, but what an eventful story they told. His debut was against St. Mirren at Love Street with Clydebank down 1-0 to a future Bankie, Peter Kane goal when goalkeeper Dick Madden had to go off injured after 70 minutes. John Baxter came on as a substitute but two goals in the last five minutes saw the Saints run out 3-0 winners. His next match saw Dick Madden out injured and replaced by Maurice Dunne a loan signing from Dumbarton as Clydebank went down 4-2 at home to Queen of the South. His next match was one he would never forget, going down 6-0 to East Fife at Bayview. Dennis was sent off but he wasn’t first into the shower as Stan King and Tony Moy had both been sent off earlier. Clydebank also lost their Trialist goalkeeper Bobby Hodge to injury, with John Baxter coming off the bench to go into goal. His final match of the season was a 2-1 defeat away to Stenhousemuir with yet another trialist goalkeeper Ian Porter between the sticks for Clydebank.
It had been a tough baptism for young Dennis Ruddy but it stood him in good stead and he went on to enjoy a good career with Clydebank playing over 150 games. For a man of his size he should have been more of a threat in the opposition box but seemed to get a nose bleed when he crossed the halfway line. He was however an honest player who added a bit of much needed muscle and steel to the Clydebank back line.
Dennis transferred to our local rivals Dumbarton where he enjoyed a couple of seasons before moving on to Stenhousemuir before moving into junior football with Renfrew.
