Clydebank edged out Second Division opposition Berwick Rangers in an entertaining midweek friendly at New Kilbowie, with inside-left Tony Moy the star of the show.
A good crowd turned out under the floodlights to see Bankies test themselves against league opposition, and they were rewarded with an action-packed second half after a relatively quiet opening period.
Clydebank opened the scoring after 19 minutes when Moy was brought down on the edge of the box. From the resulting penalty, Hodgson stepped up and, although Berwick 'keeper Junior got a hand to it, he couldn’t keep it out.
Berwick thought they had equalised almost immediately through Stewart, but the linesman’s flag ruled it out for offside. The remainder of the first half saw some tidy football from both sides, but little to trouble either goalkeeper.
After the break, Clydebank took control. Seven minutes into the half, Moy doubled the advantage with a superb low drive into the corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance. Just five minutes later, he struck again—this time diving to head home a cross from Joe Rankin to make it 3–0.
Berwick, however, weren’t finished. Former Celtic forward Bobby Young produced a quickfire double to bring the visitors back into the match. On 61 minutes he fired past Wilson from 18 yards, and barely 30 seconds after the restart, broke through again and netted from close range.
The comeback set up a tense final half-hour as Berwick pressed hard for an equaliser, but Clydebank held firm under pressure to see out an impressive win over league opposition.
This result will have done no harm to Clydebank’s growing reputation as they continue to build momentum on and off the field.
