Match Report

Daily Record

Until Cant and Jack, Arbroath's twin strikers, turned-on their double act in the 29th and 31st minutes, Clydebank looked the better side. The quick one-two knocked the stuffing out of them, and from then on it was no contest.

Hughes had a go but there was little strength behind his shot and McDonald saved easily. At the other end Phillips pulled down a shot from Caskie. Clydebank were showing some smart touches and giving the Arbroath defence a good deal of trouble.

Doyle broke through in one of their raids and fired in a beauty which Phillips held confidently. Munro then had a shot which whizzed past.

Arbroath went ahead after 28 minutes. Cant accepted a pass from Mackay and shot past Macdonald. They went two up two minutes later. Walker crossed from the left after beating two men and crossed it to Bruce. The inside man headed it to Jack, who nodded home.

Arbroath's third was an own goal two minutes from the Interval. MacKay raced up the wing and crossed. The ball eluded McDonald, but struck right back McMillan and went into the empty net.

After the restart, a free kick by Cant was caught by McDonald. In Arbroath's next raid both Jack, Bruce and Cant had tries.

Hughes then sent in a low shot which McDonald dropped but there was no Arbroath forward near to take advantage.

With the visitors well beaten, Cargill banged home a fourth.

Arbroath Herald

Arbroath are on the goal trail again. After having scored only once in each of their four previous League Cup encounters, they hit four against Clydebank at Gayfield on Saturday.

In so doing they broke their points duck in the competition, for the earlier games had all ended in defeat.

The opening exchanges, however, were not in the Maroons favour, and the pessimists among the spectators were forecasting a further defeat.

Nothing, however, was further from the truth. The homesters settled down after their somewhat shaky opening, and once they gained the upper hand, they never relaxed their grip on the game.

This was a team that carried no passengers. From defence to attack they played exceedingly well.

Although not called on very often, Phillips in goal expertly dealt with everything that came his way.

McKay and Milne were sound at full-back, although the latter, on occasion, was suspect with his passing.

The mid-line of Cargill, Waddell and Walker kept a tight reign on the visiting forwards, and were able to provide their own attack with a plentiful supply of ammunition, of which the latter took full advantage.

Up front, attention was focussed on diminutive right-winger 18-year-old Kenny Payne, who was making his initial appearance in the first team before the home fans. They liked what they saw.

The youngster, showing a good burst of speed and splendid ball control, teased and tormented left-back Mitchell. He appeared to infuse new life into the attack. The inside trio of Cant, Jack and Bruce also showed up well, but Hughes is out of place on the left wing. All in all, this was a refreshing display by the Maroons.

Arbroath kicked off and attacked on the left. Hughes had a go, but there was little strength behind his shot, and McDonald saved easily. At the other end Phillips pulled down a shot from Caskie. Doyle broke through in another Clydebank raid and fired in a beauty which Phillips held confidently. Munro then had a shot which whizzed past the far up-right.

Arbroath quickly retaliated, and although McDonald was unable to hold Hughes' shot the ball was quickly cleared.

Munro next hared up the wing, his low shot being well held by Phillips.

The Clydebank defence was opened up in Arbroath's next attack, but Jack's oblique shot was straight at McDonald.

Payne next had a ramping run up the wing, his perfect cross being headed into McDonald's hands by Jack.

Arbroath went ahead after 28 minutes. Cant accepted a pass from McKay and shot low and hard past McDonald.

They went two up two minutes later. Walker crossed from the left, after beating two men, to Bruce. The inside man headed to Jack, who nodded it home.

Arbroath's third was an own goal two minutes from the interval. McKay raced up the wing and sent over. The ball eluded McDonald, but struck right-back McMillan and went into the empty net.

Arbroath again took up the running on the resumption, and Hughes had a try, but the ball was well over.

Next, a free-kick by Cant was caught in mid-air by McDonald.

In Arbroath's next raid Jack, Bruce and Cant had tries, but the ball was ultimately cleared with difficulty.

Hughes then sent in a low shot which McDonald dropped, but there was no Arbroath forward near to take advantage of this slip. After 63 minutes Clydebank substituted Howitt for Doyle.

McDonald was again in action when he had to dive at full stretch to save a shot from Walker. The Maroons almost had a fourth goal when Bruce broke through. He had only McDonald to beat, but his first-time shot was luckily deflected by the 'keeper's out-stretched leg.

With eight minutes to go, Arbroath. substituted Mollison for Payne, when the winger sustained a leg injury after being brought down during one of his scintillating runs on the wing.

Two minutes from time Cargill notched Arbroath's fourth.
