Match Report

This single goal defeat at the hands of Clydebank at Kilbowie Park cost Arbroath the opportunity of playing off against Cowdenbeath in a supplementary tie to secure a place in the quarter final of the League Cup. Arbroath, who only needed a point, played defensively and after they had been shocked by a Larnach goal in the 63rd minute, could not raise their game to snatch an equaliser.

Arbroath were pinned to defence as Clydebank having to win, attacked strongly from the kick off. In the fifth minute Murray had to concede a corner by heading past a dangerous Abel cross.

Three minutes later Cargill had a long range shot for Arbroath, but McKenzie saved easily. The inside left then sent a 20 yard shot inches wide.

When Clydebank came back Milne got a wigging from the referee for pushing Lumsden, who had fouled Wilson.

Arbroath’s defence got in a tangle in the 27th minute – and a Hay lob was rolling home when Wells hooked clear to Lumsden, but Wilson was back in position to save the winger’s shot.

Arbroath almost went ahead in the 33rd minute, a long ball by Rylance put Bone through but the centre was pulled down by Fallon. Bone too the free-kick himself and from 20 yards curled a shot around the wall, but McKenzie saved in a brilliant fashion.

In the second half Arbroath took Fletcher off in the 53rd minute and Sellars replaced him.

The decisive goal came in the 64th minute when Larnach receiving a pass from Lumsden shot past Williams from 10 yards.

In a desperate effort to save the game Arbroath used their second substitute in the 73rd minute, Carson going on for Cargill. Three minutes later Hay was replaced by McColl and with 11 minutes to play Caskie came on for Cooper.
