There have been a number of Clydebank players who have gone on to have successful careers after they left Kilbowie Park, however for Jimmy Lumsden it was behind the scenes he would go on to make his name.
Jimmy signed for the Bankies in the summer of 1975 becoming one of the final pieces in the jigsaw of Clydebank’s greatest ever side that won successive promotions to the Premier League from the Second Division.
It was a star-studded start to Jimmy’s career as he was plucked from school to sign for Leeds United. He spent five year at Elland Road managing eight first team appearances before moving to Southend United on a free transfer.
He only lasted a season at Roots Hall, before moving back to Scotland for the first of two spells at Morton, playing for St Mirren and Cork Hibernians in between times. It was after a final season at Cappielow that he signed for Clydebank.
As the Bankies embarked on their first season in the newly reconstructed Second Division, Jimmy was one of ten full-time players at Kilbowie. Jimmy was a left-sided midfielder, and although being just 5ft 6in he was a battle hardened figure with plenty of experience that the Bankies side needed.
He was often described as a constructive midfielder, who would link up the midfield with the forwards and he had the firepower ahead of him in the shape of Cooper, Larnach and McCallan to supply the ammo for.
It was a successful first season at Kilbowie as Clydebank won the Second Division Championship and were runners-up in the ill-fated Spring Cup.
This was just the start however. With Sammy Henderson retiring, Jimmy became captain and would go on to lead the club to the Premier League at the first time of asking. He also played in all four games in the famous four-match saga against Rangers in the League Cup.
As expected, the Premier League was a bridge too far for this Clydebank team exacerbated by the loss of the great Davie Cooper. Jimmy would lose his place in the team as manager Bill Munro searched for the elusive winning formula.
As a result Jimmy returned to the starting line-up and would etch his name in the club’s history as he scored the second goal in Clydebank’s 3-2 victory over Celtic. The one and only time the Bankies would defeat the Glasgow giants
It was known at this stage that Jimmy would be leaving the club at the end of the season, but the whereabouts were not disclosed until the campaign was completed.
The move was revealed to be a position at Celtic as reserve team coach, meaning that Jimmy would retire from playing at just 31 years of age. Jimmy had made it known throughout his playing career that he had designs on being a manager at some point.
This was to be the beginning of a stunning career in the world of management for Jimmy. After a period at Celtic Park, Jimmy secured the position of assistant manager at old club Leeds United in tandem with his contemporary and Scottish international Eddie Gray.
This was short-lived as Gray was sacked from the Elland Road hot-seat not long afterwards leading to a period out of the professional game.
He returned to management at Bristol City and not forgetting his time at Clydebank, he brought the Robins north of the border twice to play the Bankies twice in pre-season friendlies at Kilbowie.
After his time came to an end at Ashton Gate, he joined the backroom staff at Preston North End under a young David Moyes. The success at Preston led to Moyes being appointed manager at Everton with Lumsden joining him as head coach.
After eleven years at Goodison Park, Jimmy would follow David Moyes to Old Trafford after he was appointed manager at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Unfortunately, following the great Alex Ferguson did not work out and within 12 months Moyes was relieved of his duties and the backroom followed. By this time Jimmy was 68 years of age and after almost 15 years in the English Premier League it was time to retire.
Due to his three seasons in Clydebank’s most successful side, Jimmy was inducted into the Bankies Hall of Fame in 2018 Despite his lofty position at Everton at the time, Jimmy collected his award in-person at the club’s Sportsman's Dinner.
Jimmy was born on this date in Glasgow.
