Match Report

Two sensational incidents inside three minutes late in the second half put paid to Clydebank's chances of gaining one of the greatest results in their history.

After leading twice, Bankies were stunned by a 72nd minute penalty decision which gave Rangers the chance to go level. A Black shot skidded off Davie Cooper and as Tony Gervaise and John MacDonald went for the ball, the two barely seemed to touch.

Referee McGunnigle, however, pointed to the spot. Robert Pritz, however, wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth and he rolled the kick past Jim Gallacher.

Younger players began to tire and with fatigue came a fatal loss of discipline. Three minutes after the controversial penalty, Tom Coyne was booked, and as the referee showed him the card, Tony Gervaise and Dave McKinnon were involved in an off-the-ball incident. The warning signs were showing for Bankies.

Seconds later Rangers won a corner. Craig Paterson and Coyne, niggling for most of the evening, shadowed each other in the penalty area. As the two jostled, Coyne suddenly backhanded the Ibrox defender across the face.

Coyne was ordered off and from that moment it was only a matter of time until Clydebank cracked under the pressure. Sure enough, six minutes from time Redford raced in to bullet a superbly headed winner. But it was the Kilbowie side which took most of the credit from the game.

The opening goal from Williamson was a gem. Given and Gervaise combined well on the left, Williamson played a one-two with Coyne, and the burly No. 9 drew Stewart before clipping a shot inside the far post.

Bankies put an amazing amount of pressure on the home defence up until the break. However, McClelland struck back in 61 minutes when his overhead kick was volleyed past Gallacher by the unmarked MacDonald.

Rangers' joy was short-lived, though, and three minutes later Mark Treanor met a McCabe free kick, for over-carrying by Stewart, to crash a marvellous 22-yarder into the back of the net.
