Tommy Coyne came through the ranks at Clydebank at a time when it seemed a never-ending conveyor belt of talent was being reared at Kilbowie Park. An intelligent, clever player not short on guile, his one shortcoming was a slight lack of pace. This did not prevent Tommy from having a successful career culminating in 22 caps for the Republic of Ireland and appearances in the 1994 World cup in the USA
Tommy arrived at Kilbowie from Hillwood Boys Club in the summer of 1981. He had attracted interest from other clubs including Rangers. No doubt the Bankies reputation for giving young players a chances was instrumental in a lot of young players trying their luck at Kilbowie Park
At the time the Bankies were looking for a regular striking partner for Blair Millar. The previous season had been poor with Tom McGorm, David Jones, and Joe Sweeney amongst others tried in the number 10 shirt. By the time October arrived, results were average and goals in short supply, and after sitting on the bench in a 2-1 defeat at Queen of the South, Tommy was thrown in for a full debut against Raith Rovers at Starks Park. It took just eight minutes for Tommy to open his account, and strike partner Millar grabbed a second to get his Bankies career off to a winning start.
Tommy scored in his first three games for the Bankies, although his second game was a consolation effort in the infamous 7-1 defeat at home to a rampant Motherwell side. Tommy would go on to keep his place for the rest of the season despite only returning a total of just 9 goals in 33 appearances. He made way towards the end of the season as the Bankies tried out a new striker by the name of Bobby Williamson.
The partnership with Blair Millar would never have an extended run as he was transferred to Airdrie at the end of the season. Clydebank had shown improvement and finished fourth in the first division, but without an experienced marksman in the line-up it would be left to Coyne (20) and Williamson (21) to be the club’s main strikers.
But what a decision it turned out to be. Williamson played in all 47 games, with Coyne just one less due to a suspension after being sent off against Rangers at Ibrox. Williamson finished top scorer with 25 goals and Tommy not far behind on 20. Their goals took the Bankies to the brink of promotion missing out in third place behind Hearts and St Johnstone.
1983-84 saw Coyne is sparkling form. He almost netted three hat-tricks in consecutive league games. After hitting trebles against Meadowbank Thistle and Ayr United, he missed a penalty against Morton and had to be content with a double in a 3-3 draw. This form was alerting the big clubs including Newcastle United who came to watch Tommy play, however it was a £60,000 bid from Dundee United that would take him away from Kilbowie later that same month. He would leave with a record of 41 goals in just 94 game.
Dundee United were a real force in Scottish football at the time with the likes of Davie Dodds and Paul Sturrock in their squad. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for Tommy at Tannadice and he only managed 14 goals in 75 games. After three seasons he was off-loaded to neighbours Dundee and his career sprung back into life. He would score 37 goals in one season for the Dens Park club and this earned him a £500,000 move to Celtic.
His four years at Celtic Park at were trophyless but he was a bright spark in a poor period for Celtic. His scoring record was good, but when Liam Brady took over the manager’s job he obviously wasn’t rated and was soon transferred to Tranmere Rovers.
Barely months into his time on Merseyside Tommy’s wife tragically died and he returned to Scotland and signed with Motherwell. Tommy had lost none of his goalscoring flair and became the first player to be top scorer in the Premier League with three different clubs (Dundee, Celtic and Motherwell)
After winding down his career with Dundee (again) and Falkirk, Tommy returned to Clydebank as player manager in August 2000 at the age of 37. This was not the Clydebank that Tommy had left 17 years earlier.
When Tommy returned to the Bankies the club were already in turmoil. The Steedman family had sold Kilbowie and pocketed the money as well as a further £250,000 for the club itself to a consortium with nefarious motives. Headed by Dr John Hall there was a failed attempt to relocate the club to Dublin. With the club playing out of Cappielow Park, and just been relegated from the First Division with only one league win all season, Coyne had his work cut out.
The Bankies did reasonably well initially under Coyne in the Second Division despite all the problems, but the writing was on the wall when the club was placed into administration by Hall. The administrators took the decision to sack Coyne in February 2001 at the behest of preferred bidder of the club David McGhie, just six months into his tenure. The club were sitting in fourth place at the time, but were well off the promotion places. Coyne added a further 5 goals in 20 appearances during his second stint at the club.
Tommy will always be remembered fondly by the Clydebank faithful, mainly from his first spell at the club when he was just a young boy making his way in the game. He carried on his success at Kilbowie throughout his career and is one of the great under-rated strikers in Scottish Football.
