Match Report

The Scotsman

Clydebank had only their pluck to commend them in this challenge match at New Kilbowie Park last night. Celtic were streets ahead and most assuredly taught their opponents a lesson in the art of chance snapping. McBride had a splendid game at inside right Scoring himself and laying on another.

McBride got the opening goal in 32 minutes. He collected a long clearance from Fallon, left the Clydebank defence standing for speed, then lashed the ball to the far corner from the 18 yards line. McMahon scored a second when he crashed a McBride cross to the net from close range. Cattanach added a third in the second half when Celtic fielded four of their young players as substitutes.

Daily Record

Goalkeepers look out - Celtic's golden goalscorer Joe McBride is all set to pick up where he left off a year ago.

He showed all his old flair and hunger for goals in this challenge match at New Kilbowie

A year ago McBride was Scotland's leading scorer when a knee injury put him on the side-lines for the rest of the season.

And Judged on his performance last night he's ready to fit into Celtic's first team goal machine again.

It was McBride who made the first real breach in the Clydebank defence.

In 31 minutes he went through with a great burst of speed when goalkeeper Fallon's long clearance eluded the Bankies centre half Eddie Moore.

And then It was McBride at his scoring best when he placed his ground shot from 13 yards into a corner of the net.

It was easy for Celtic after that though McBride showed a welcome desire to continue to go all out.

With a clever move from the right corner flag he made the second goal in 44 minutes for Pat McMahon and frequently In the second half he played a brilliant part in the double striker role with John Hughes. Yogi could not have been more enthusiastic.

It won't be at all surprising if the McBride-Hughes double act goes in against Hearts at Parkhead on Saturday.

Celtic's third goal from 20 yards In the sixth minute of the second half.

Celtic monopolised the attack after that with a gallant home defence, in which former Celtic keeper Dick Madden was outstanding defying them.

Cattanach, Sam Henderson, McMahon and Charlie Gallacher substituted in the second half at various stages by teenagers John Gorman, John Taggart, Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain.

Clydebank replaced Ayrton Inacio and former Hibs player John Baxter with youngsters Devlin and Caskie.

But the teenager who impressed most was Celtic centre Half George Connelly wo had a brilliant game. Tony Moy was Clydebank's most dangerous forward but like his teammates he faded in the second half.
