Match Report

Aberdeen Evening Express

Arbroath were obviously determined to erase the memory of last week's cup defeat by Clydebank at Gayfield and were rewarded with goals from Walker in the first half and Stirling in the second.

Cant tested McDonald with a 30yd drive from the right touch-line in the first minute but Clydebank surged back and the home goal had one or two anxious moments, The visitors were a quick moving combine and their speed and enthusiasm forced the Arbroath players to make mistakes.

It was Arbroath, however, who took the lead in 10 minutes. Wilkie forced Mitchell to concede a corner and the left winger kept his flag kick low WALKER met the ball as he ran and fired in great 25yd. first-time drive which left the Clydebank keeper clutching vainly in thin air.

Bankies fought back with determination and Caskie was not far on target with low shot.

At the other end Reed won a race for a Sellar's pass but McDonald blocked the inside man's parting shot with his body.

Walker was almost on target tor Arbroath with another first-time effort in 24 minutes when he volleyed a low-headed pass from Jack and the ball went just wide of the goal.

Gray had his name taken by the referee following a tackle on Sellars in 26 minutes.

Sellars almost increased their lead in a quick raid, the ball going just wide of target.

Wilkie was looking dangerous on the Arbroath wing and from one of his crosses Sellars almost beat the Clydebank keeper with a diving header, McDonald, however, gathered the ball at the second attempt.

Sellars missed & good chance to increase Arbroath's lead three minutes after resumption when a Walker cross found him in front of goal. The winger, however, failed to make proper contact with the ball and McDonald had no trouble in gathering.

O'Brien made a good opening for himself in the Arbroath penalty area in 52 minutes but wasted the opportunity by ballooning the ball over the bar.

Two minutes later Walker was brought down in a break through the middle. He took the free kick himself but his eye was off target.

Clydebank were looking more dangerous than in the first half but they were reduced to 10 men in 65 minutes when McGhee, was sent off following an incident with Cargill, The referee did not see tt happen but his attention was drawn to it by one of his linesmen.

Three minutes later Munro was booked for a tackle on Sellars.

Arbroath went two ahead in 69 minutes when Stirling, up with his forwards beat McDonald with drooping header from a Wilkie cross.

Arbroath Herald

Arbroath avenged their Scottish Cup defeat at the hands of Clydebank the previous week by taking two valuable promotion points off the 'Bankies, who were again the visitors to Gayfield on Saturday.

This was a much-improved Arbroath on their last showing. They set to with a will, and showed considerably more fighting spirit. It was the defence who took the honours in this latest encounter. The attack at times showed, but it seldom got any further than that. Chances were again made, but there was no one up front with a lethal shot. The unit as a whole lacked thrust, and only Reed and Wilkie gained pass marks. Sellars and Jack were completely out of the picture, and Cant seldom took the eye.

It was left to the half-back line to show the necessary impetus and to get the Maroons on the goal standard. Both counters came from this quarter.

Clydebank lacked the sharpness of the previous week, although they were still strong on the wings. But when they lost the place in the second half they also appeared to lose the head, and several Arbroath players had the feet scythed from them.

Arbroath in the end ran out worthy winners, but more aggressiveness in attack is required.

Arbroath were first to attack and Cant fired in a shot which McDonald held easily.

Hughes was next to have a go, but there was little force behind his effort, and again McDonald had no difficulty in clearing.

Arbroath forced a corner on the left and from Wilkie's flag kick Walker scored with a thundering shot from 25 yards which gave McDonald no chance. This was after 10 minutes.

In a Clydebank raid Caskie sent in a low shot which was only inches past.

At the other end, Reed broke through and McDonald, who had come out of his charge, saved the inside man's shot on the ground. Clydebank next forced two corners on the left in quick succession, but nothing came of them. Another Walker effort which was well on target was flicked away by a defender for a fruitless corner.

For a tackle on Sellars, Gray was booked after 26 minutes. Arbroath were stepping up the pressure, and in another raid Sellars fired in a shot which skimmed the bar.

The Clydebank goal had a lucky escape when Wilkie raced through the defence. Reed rushed in to connect, but McDonald and Gray managed between them to clear.

Arbroath took up the running immediately on resuming, and Wilkie crossed into the centre. Sellars rushed in to connect, but failed to do so properly, and McDonald cleared.

Play quickly transferred to the other end and O'Brien, who was then on the left wing, cleverly beat two defenders, but blazed well over.

Walker was then weaving his way through when he was pulled down by Love just outside the penalty box. Walker took the kick himself but the elevation of his shot was on the high side.

After 65 minutes Clydebank lost the services of centre-forward McGhee. He kicked Cargill after being dispossessed, and although he was unobserved by the referee the infringement was seen by a linesman.

Three minutes later Munro's name went into the referee's black book for a foul on Sellars. In 69 minutes the homesters went two up, Stirling heading in a cross by Wilkie.

A third goal almost came in the 76th minute when Reed's shot cannoned off an upright, with McDonald well beaten.

Sunday Post

Arbroath gained revenge for their Cup defeat and kept themselves among the leaders in the promotion race. They were always the stronger side, and Clydebank did not play nearly as well as they did the previous week.

For all their pressure, Arbroath might have been sharper in front of goal. Only two forwards, Wilkie and Reid, carried any threat. Centre-forward Jack and Sellars made little impression.

Clydebank looked dangerous in breakaways, young wingers O'Brien and Caskie being particularly impressive. Unfortunately, when things got tousy, they lost centre-forward McGhee, ordered off after a clash with Cargill. They also had Gray and Munro booked for fouls on Arbroath's Sellars.

Arbroath, playing strongly in the first half, got a goal from their best player, teenage left-half Tom Walker, who scored from 25 yards. In the second half, No. 2 also came from a defender, centre-half and captain Stirling.

Sunday Mail

Arbroath avenged their Cup defeat the previous week by taking two valuable promotion points off the Bankies, who were again the visitors to Gayfield.

Fouls were only too frequent. Clydebank's McGhee was sent off and Munro was booked.

In the first period Gray's name had also gone into the referee's black book.

Arbroath took the lead after 10 minutes following a corner kick. Walker gained possession on the left and sent in a rocket shot from 25 yards.
