Danny Gray joined Clydebank from Chelsea. He was in the same Chelsea youth team as Alan Hudson who despite his ability only won two England international caps. Danny played left half for Chelsea youth and scored in a 5-1 local derby win over Tottenham. Suffering from home sickness he returned to Scotland although there were plenty of Scots on Chelsea’s books at the time including Tommy Docherty, Eddie McCreadie, George Graham and Charlie Cooke. However London is a lonely city for a young boy and Danny would only have been sixteen at that time.
He signed for the Bankies in April 1968 and was one of the original Bankies Babes. He played 140 games for Clydebank in four seasons, but tragically, by the time he played his last game in December 1972, he was only 21 years old and should have still had his best football days in front of him.
Danny made his debut in a 2-1 League Cup win against Queen of the South at Palmerston on 17 August 1968, he came on as a substitute for another ‘Babe’ Dougie Hay for the last 2 minutes ! His home debut ended in a 3-1 defeat by East Fife. Danny was back on the subs bench for the next game, a League Cup tie against Queen of the South at Kilbowie which ended up 1-1. Fate however played a hand, as another ‘Babe’, Jim Fallon was playing left back in this game and came off injured at half-time, Danny came on as substitute and found his new playing position.
He was a neat tidy player, a good tackler and formed a good partnership with Dougie Hay and Jimmy Caskie on the Clydebank left side. His most memorable match would probably be the Scottish Cup tie at Pittodrie on 11 February 1970, when Clydebank were unlucky to go down 2-1 to the eventual Cup Winners, Aberdeen.
For three and a half years, Danny became the Bankies regular left-back, however he fell out of love with football, and wanted to stop playing. This led to a protracted dispute with Jack Steedman, as Danny went AWOL for a short period in 1972. Eventually, the problem was resolved but the club saw still fit to fine Danny for breach of contract. Things were never the same again, as the issues re-surfaced shortly afterwards and Danny was released in January 1973 at his own request.
Sadly, Danny Gray passed away in 2011, his funeral eulogy was carried out by his best man and friend Bankies goalkeeper Mike McDonald with his coach Bill Munro also in attendance.
