Match Report

Clydebank Press

The Killer instinct of Jimmy Caskie won this pre-season challenge game at Kilbowie in the 20th minute. It acted as a shake-down performance for the new-look Bankies who fielded Andy Roxburgh, Gregor Abel and Pat Delaney for the first time.

Despite the new European style Clydebank strips and the evidence of new paintwork throughout the club's ground both sides had to contend with a steady clinging drizzle on Monday night.

The game had hardly started when a black mongrel from the neighbourhood decided to join in. He was unceremoniously carried off by Rochdale's Colin Blant.

Despite the initial tentativeness the stocky 3rd Division Lancastrians had the edge on build-up but lacked the execution. Clydebank were over hasty and did not take enough time putting together a co-ordinated attack.

McDonald tipped a shot from Rochdale's Tony Buck wide in the first really threatening move. Any psychological advantage the English northerners then had was removed five minutes hence by Jimmy Caskie.

In an opportunist run up the right wing wee Jimmy ran round two defenders and unleashed a 30 yard shot. Goalie Rodney Jones made a grab for the ball, half clinched it, but it whistled into the rear of the net.

This was a signal for Clydebank to string together something resembling a cohesive attack. Keen to impress, Andy Roxburgh was thwarted in the 22nd minute in a desperate goal mouth skirmish. Although the Bankies lacked penetrating power their defence was solid.

On trotted the teams for the restart and on trotted the wayward hound. This time Dougie Hay took him off. Clydebank subbed McPaul for Roxburgh and Love for Currie while Rochdale used a quartet of subs, Kinsella, Jenkins, Brogden and Gowans.

Buck had another shot in the 52nd minute but McDonald was alert to the threat. Rochdale's finishing was poor with Clydebank's midfield grip strengthening.

The Bankies should have extended their goal lead in the 60th and 63rd minutes. Firstly Caskie ran strongly on to a through pass from Hay but Jones diverted his shot safely. Then Munro was thwarted in front of a vulnerable Rochdale goalmouth,

This period was probably the most entertaining of the whole damp 90 minutes. Rochdale made several attempts and 15 minutes from time Clydebank survived a hectic assault.

With Clydebank's new mixture of potential talent and Caskie's injury a nasty memory Jack Steedman may well have the resources of a young hungry team tempered by several older heads to channel the energy.

Monday night, in all honesty, was not a gala performance, but it served to show indications of a Clydebank team with depth and strength.
