Match Report

Partick Thistle took a giant stride towards the League Cup Semi-finals with a thoroughly deserved success over Clydebank in last night’s Quarter Final first leg at Firhill.

Never was the difference between First and Second division football made so apparent despite the fact that Clydebank are full time.

Thistle were streets ahead and indeed the game was over as a contest at the interval when the Jags went in three up. It became a question of how many after that.

Thistle hadn’t a weakness and their shooting star was Somner with a brace of goals. They were a well drilled side strong in defence progressive at wing half and lethal up front.

McKenzie, the Clydebank keeper, had kept his goal intact in his previous seven games but he had to put in a double shift to keep the eager beaver Thistle forwards from beating him more often.

Thistle were ahead after only three minutes. Kellachan took a free kick and the Clydebank defence was at sixes and sevens.

Fallon’s clearance went to Houston who stepped in to shoot through from the six yard line. It was all Thistle after this. McKenzie stopping a rocket shot from John Craig and a flashing header from Joe Craig following a McQuade corner on the left.

Thistle went two up in the 29th minute. Somner was right on the spot to meet a headed pass from Joe Craig and leave McKenzie helpless with a cracking drive from the 18 yard line.

Five minutes from the interval, it was all over as Clydebank were concerned when Thistle scored a third goal. John Craig took a corner on the right and Alan Hansen nodded the ball to McQuade who headed cleanly into the net.

Clydebank had Caskie on for Hay at the start of the second half but the trend of play continued to favour Thistle.

Somner missed the easiest of chances by blazing over an open goal when Houston teed the ball up.

Unfortunately the right winger sustained a leg knock and was taken off in the 70th minute to be replaced by Marr. Three minutes later Clydebank sent on Provan for Fallon.

Eight minutes from the end Thistle were awarded a penalty kick when Goodwin nudged Somner off the ball. The inside left took the spot kick himself and gave McKenzie no chance with a full blooded volley.

Thistle used their second substitute in the 84th minute when Lawrie replaced Joe Craig and two minutes later Provan was booked for a foul on McQuade.
