Full marks to Clydebank for a superb display against Partick Thistle in this League Cup quarter final second leg at Clydebank last night to smash the Firhill club's unbeaten record. Up until this match Thistle were the only unbeaten side in British Senior soccer, but the Bankies ended their successful run with a slick and efficient performance.
The Dunbartonshire club played a brand of football in keeping with their position as Second Division leaders. They were never at any time overawed by their First Division opponents and matched them at every turn and the full time policy was reflected in their superb fitness.
The result was also a memorable milestone for big Roddy McKenzie, their Irish international goalkeeper, chalking up his 10th shut-out in 11 matches. He had excellent coverage from full backs Hall and Abel with the latter the match winner.
Goodwin dominated in the middle and the attack revelled in the service supplied by wing halves Fallon and Hay. Up front the speed of Cooper and the needle sharpness of Larnach were factors to which Thistle had no answer.
The Firhill club were possibly pulled into a false sense of security by their four-goal lead from the first leg, but they were caught out and had no alibi.
Rough had some brilliant saves. John Hansen and Kellachan had their hands full coping with the lively Clydebank wingers. Alan Hansen was a hero at centre half. Campbell and Anderson spread the play intelligently but their club mates up front simply could not free themselves of the shackles imposed on them by the razor keen tackling of the Clydebank defence.
Only Houston up front consistently carried a threat. He was always a menace in possession.
The only goal of the game came in the third minute. Abel came down field to swing a high ball into the middle from just over the halfway line. Rough went up for the ball, harassed by two Bankies forwards, but all of them missed and the ball landed in the back of the net.
Thistle tried their utmost to save the game from then on but Clydebank matched them at every turn. and seemed to have every avenue towards McKenzie sealed off.
