Match Report

Clydebank Press

This was the Youth teams final preparatory match, before they take part in the International Youth Tournament next month.

Being the host country, Scotland are expected to put up a good show, and on their first-half display at Kilbowie on Monday night, the Scottish fans won't Be disappointed.

The young Scots gave the equally young 'Bankies team a tanking but at half-time they had only the one goal to show for their trouble and almost continuous pressure.

In only 60 seconds, centre-forward Carruthers, of Hearts, slammed the ball past McDonald, after Dennis Ruddy failed to control the ball.

The young forward created havoc among the Bankies defence, and he might have added another in the 16th minute, but he rushed' his header, when he had plenty of time to control the ball and sent it over the bar.

The young Scots were pounding away at the Bankies relentlessly, and it was all the Clydebank lads could do to keep the ball out of the net.

The best chance the 'Bankies had of scoring, came in the 37th minute, when a tremendous header from Bobbie Doyle cannoned off the cross-bar, with the keeper beaten.

I don't know what was said to the Bankies at half-time in their dressing room, but they came out a different team; in their approach to the game, not in personnel.

The forwards were chasing and harrying the Scottish defence, while the Bankies' defence kept a tight rein on the young Scots forward line.

There was one change in the Scottish line-up. Willie Mitchell of Raith Rovers took over from Rangers' Alfie Conn at inside-right.

A great pass from Doyle, found Alan Munro running, but keeper Graham brought off a great double-save to foil the centre-forward. He blocked Munro's first shot, and before the forward could shoot again, Graham took the ball off his feet.

A few minutes later, Clydebank got their equaliser, and what a triumph it was for Bobby Doyle. The winger was brought down by left-back Brown, on the wing.

When the free-kick floated into the young Scots' penalty box, it was headed on by Alan Munro, and Bobby Doyle hit the ball into the back of the net.

Good work by Doyle and Munro set up a chance for Donnie Wilson, but the tall inside-left sent his low shot just past the post.

Panic in the Scottish defence nearly allowed Alan Munro in to score, but the 'keeper saved his shot, turning it' past for a corner.

Almost immediately, Munro missed another great chance, when, after good leading up work by Danny Gray and Jimmy Caskie, he tried to tap the ball into the empty net, but the keeper recovered in time to stick a boot out and clear.

In the Scottish team I thought left-back Brown and left-half Craig excelled, in defence, with Eric Carruthers their best forward.

Best for the 'Bankies, was Bobby Doyle. He just refuses to be beaten.
