Frank McAleer was signed from Renfrew Juniors in 1967 after impressing as a trialist against Third Lanark in the final game of the season. He was strong in the air despite not being the tallest for a centre half.
One of his very first games was a pre-season friendly against Tommy Docherty's Chelsea who boasted household names like Charlie Cooke, Peter Osgood, Bobby Tambling, Peter Houseman, John Hopkins, Peter Bonetti and Ron " Chopper" Harris. Bankies gave the big boys a fright, leading twice through goals from John Baxter and Tommy McGhee with Tommy Baldwin and Peter Osgood responding for the visitors. Chelsea returned a month later to play the Bankies in celebration of the launch of the QE11. This time the big boys won 4-1.
Frank’s time at Kilbowie was shortened as a result of a very bad leg knock sustained in a match against Queens Park in February 1968 which kept him out of action for almost one year. On his return he played one game and was transferred to Morton.
He eventually left Scottish football and emigrated to Australia where again injury forced him to retire from the game.
