Match Report

Sunday Post

A devastating first half performance by Queens. Clydebank had no answer to their well-knit, incisive approach play, and their interval nap hand might have been greater.

The balloon went up fast with two goals in the first four minutes.

Dick flicked home a perfect pass by Davison, and Jackson followed with a cool lob into the net from service by McChesney.

It was one way traffic thereafter, and further scores by Dick, Collings and Jackson before the interval emphasised Queens superiority in every aspect of the game.

After the interval Queens eased off, But, while a rearranged Bankies side had a little more of the play than previously, they were still unable to pierce the solid defence in front of Ball.

Only once was the keeper in any trouble, and then he did well to turn round a hot shot by Moy.
Madden, the visiting keeper was in no way to blame for the defeat. Only he and McGhee were up to the standard of the Dumfries men, best of whom were the half backs and, up front, Dick, Davison and Law.

Evening News and Star

The visit of Clydebank to Palmerston on Saturday provided a real joy-day for the 3000 Queen of the South Supporters who saw their favourites score twice in the first four minutes and go on to a 5-0 interval lead.

Although there was no further scoring, the home forwards might well have added to the total had they continued their devastating first-half shooting power.

Clydebank, beset by injuries, were in trouble right from the kick-off, and in the in the second minute Kenny Dick neatly glided the ball well out of the reach of ex-Celtic keeper Dick Madden.

A couple of minutes later McChesney pushed a pass through to Jackson who beat two defenders before rounding Madden to tap the ball into the empty net.

Nearly 25 minutes had gone before the "Bankies" bad their first shot at goal. Winger Russell, less than 10 yards out, shot the ball right out of the ground and into neighbouring Terregles Street.

In the 27th minute Collings beat Madden with a great drive. Three minutes later Dick scored with a neat lob. Almost a replica of this goal came from Jackson two minutes from the interval.

Both sides brought on their substitutes after the break; McMurdo replacing McChesney who had received a first-half knock, and Clydebank introducing Baxter for Rutherford.

Moy should have reduced the leeway when he was left unmarked in front of goal, but Alan Ball saved splendidly at the expense of a corner.

Boyd, Clydebank's best player also missed badly after forcing his way through, and gradually the Queens regained control. McMurdo and Daley both had chances, but were well off target. The win puts Queens in second place to St. Mirren in the league table, with only a point separating the two clubs.
