Match Report

Daily Record

By the interval the Bankies were three goals up - and Raith right-back Gray must have felt sick for he scored the first after only five minutes of play.

The other two goals came well on into the first-half - a half in which Clydebank could do no wrong.

Munro and Kane were the scorers and each goal was the result of a superbly-taken chance.

The Clydebank babes didn't put a foot wrong throughout this game.

Their defence work was first rate as was the passing service provided by the midfield men to the forwards.

New signing Peter Kane proved a valuable asset last night, laying on a goal and scoring one.

Raith had the ball in the net only once but the linesman's flag was already signalling offside.

The game finished as it had begun with the home side doing all the attacking and Raith hard put to keep the final score line from escalating.

Raith went crashing to another League defeat at Kilbowie Park on Wednesday and this latest set-back immediately raises the question as to whether or not Rovers can seriously be considered as promotion candidates.

Admittedly the programme has a long way to go but one point out of a possible six is not the kind of start expected of a team which, only a few months ago was still giving a few First Division sides a run for their money.

In the past, relegated sides have usually made an immediate impact in the lower grade. Partick Thistle, for instance. qualifying for the League Cup quarter-finals but not so with Raith.

On paper, Rovers would appear to have a strong defence. The line-up is very similar to that reckoned to be the best available last season but, with only three games played, there are only three other sides which have conceded more goals.

But, of course, the rear-guard are not getting much help from the attack for only Hamilton, with one less game played have scored fewer goals one as against Rovers' two.

Powers of recovery seem to be lacking in Rovers' current make-up and this was very evident on Wednesday after hey had lost a goal in the first five minutes.

It was an unfortunate affair with right-back Alec Gray sending the ball past his own "keeper during a fairly determined Clydebank attack but there was very little bite in Raith's efforts to make up the deficit.

The forwards were unable to make very much of the tight marking of the Clydebank defence with the result that more and more pressure was thrown on Sneddon and company.

Matchwinner, as far as Clydebank were concerned. was new signing Peter Kane who, from the right wing, laid on one goal and scored another during a two minute attacking spell in which the home side put the issue beyond doubt.

It was in the 33rd minute that he teed the ball up for centre-forward Munro to turn the ball past Reid and, almost from the re-start, he was on target himself.

Only once did Raith have the ball in the net but long before the move was completed the linesman had his flag in the air to indicate off-side. The culprit was Colin Sinclair - a regular offender in this respect.

There was no fairy-tale fightback by Raith in the second-half, although the defence kept a much tighter grip on the Clydebank forwards, and the game dragged on to its inevitable conclusion.
