Match Report

Fife Free Press

That old familiar failing at Stark's Park, the inability to put the ball in the net after good leading-up work cost Raith another league point on Wednesday when Clydebank were the visitors.

In a fast and entertaining match, Rovers came so close on quite a few occasions that a matter of inches either way could have given them a lead of at least 3-0.

Instead, they had only an early brilliant goal by young Gordon Wallace to their credit and this just was not enough as Clydebank came right into the game in the later stages as Rovers tired.

Clydebank really deserved to get a point, although their goal from Caskie was only six minutes from time after a mistake by keeper Bobby Reid.

The first 45 minutes of this match was played at an incredible speed and was a thrill to watch. Raith were swinging the ball about with accuracy, while Clydebank were fast and clever on the break.

There were incidents galore at both ends, with Rovers having the upper hand by a mere fraction. But it was impossible for the players to maintain the pace of the first half throughout the match-and when Rovers faded out of it, the visitors gradually took command, especially after Raith lost Wallace with a leg injury in 76 minutes. McCarthy came on as substitute. but was never seen.

The equaliser came six minutes from time when it seemed as if Raith would keep Clydebank at bay despite being put under pressure. Centre-half Brown allowed a harmless ball to run to 'keeper Reid. but it bounced back off his hand straight to left-winger Caskie who snapped up his chance by belting the ball first-time into the corner of the net from the edge of the box.

Clydebank had hard luck only minutes before this when a right-wing cross was deflected by a defender past Reid. Full-back Alex Gray was standing on the line, however, and made another of his famous clearances.

But apart from these incidents, the second half was very quiet and will quickly be forgotten by the supporters.

Clydebank served ample warning in the first couple of minutes when a shot by Munro skimmed past the post and then Reid dived full stretch to hold a drive by winger Wilson.

Rovers got into the lead after six minutes-an excellent header from centre-forward Wallace. This was his first goal for the league side, well deserved after several fine showings.

He moved smartly on to a cross by Dave Millar, leaving the Clydebank defence yards to the rear and rose high to head the ball neatly over keeper McDonald and into the root of the net.

Clydebank got the ball past Reid after 15 minutes, but Munro had clearly stepped offside during a goalmouth scramble.

Rovers had two other great chances in the first half. First, McGuire-who had a tremendous match covering all parts of the ground-sent Cormack away and the keeper dived at his feet to save.

Then Wallace dispossessed right-half Ruddy inside the penalty box and tried a shot from an acute angle. Unfortunately, it slammed off the crossbar with McDonald nowhere.

The danger was not cleared and Wilson tried a shot which was saved instinctively by the Clydebank goalie.

If Raith had seen these efforts go in, the mistake by Reid would not have been so costly.
