Clydebank gained a slender but well earned victory in this fast entertaining, first leg tie.
After a first half which Bankies dominated, during which they were denied a penalty for a blatant handling offence, the precious goal arrived in the 57th minute.
Referee Gordon at last penalised the Fifers for hands, and Davie Cooper sent an saveable shot crashing into the net.
East Fife, although concentrating mainly on defence, made a bold bid for the equaliser but the Bankies defence was supreme.
In the final stages, Bankies applied tremendous pressure in an all out effort the a second goal that would make the trip to Methil much less perilous, However, McGarr and Co held out to keep the second leg wide open.
In a good match, enjoyed by a near 3000 crowd, East Fife had top men in George, Clarke and Steven, while Bankies were well served by Hall, McKenzie, McCallan and the impeccable Jim Fallon. They face a tough task in the second leg.
