Match Report

A devastating spell of three goals in 10 minutes shattered a Clydebank side who had looked to be in total control of this exhilarating match.

They hit back with a goal three minutes from time and a repeat of that thrilling comeback against Queen's Park looked a distinct possibility.

But the Perth Saints held on for a valuable win in their bid to go one better this season and secure a Premier League spot.

Clydebank continued their recent revival and should have made it four unbeaten games in a row, but for that 10-minute goal feast for the travelling St. Johnstone support.

Jim Morton hit the bar in the opening stages after youngster "Budgie" McGhie slipped up to leave him clear and St. Johnstone missed the target narrowly on another couple of occasions.

But it was Clydebank who settled down after the early pressure and took the lead after only 16 minutes. A harmless cross was drifting to the far post, but keeper George Tulloch made heavy weather of it and Jones beat him to the ball.

He hooked the ball across goal and Blair Millar flashed a header into the empty net. The goal seemed to take all the heart out of the Perth men, for Bankies dominated the rest of the half.

Clydebank continued to have the better of the first-half exchanges and deserved to be leading at the interval.

But what a transformation in the second half! St. Johnstone boss Alex Rennie must have had a few harsh words to say to his bedraggled men, for they came out hungry for victory.

In 47 minutes they hit the equaliser when Clydebank keeper Jim Gallacher was found wanting. Alex Caldwell rose above him to head a gifted goal.

Clydebank looked slightly nervous after the goal and skipper Jim Fallon was booked for a very high and late tackle on Pelosi.

Saints took the lead in 54 minutes when a lucky bounce left Pelosi with only Gallacher to round skilfully before tapping the ball home.

Weir was booked for a hefty challenge on Jones, who was substituted moments later by Tom McGorm. But not before McVicar had headed No. 3 from a Pelosi cross.

Two goals down, Bankies clawed their way back into the game and Millar was unlucky to see his 20-yarder soar inches over the bar.

With three minutes left, George Tulloch made his second bad mistake of the afternoon and gave the home side a glimmer of hope.

A Fallon cutback was touched through by Millar and the Perth keeper fumbled badly to let substitute McGorm slide the ball in from two yards.

In a furious last attack, Pelosi was booked for twice kicking the ball away at a free kick as Bankies surged forward for the elusive equaliser.

It didn't come and St. Johnstone were worthy winners over the piece. Clydebank can take heart, for they won't meet many better sides this season.
