Lady Luck made a rare and timely appearance for East Fife on Wednesday night at Kilbowie Park, helping the Methil side escape with a scarcely deserved two points after Clydebank dominated large stretches of the match.
The Bankies, searching for their first league win of the season, played some of their best football yet. For much of the game, they had East Fife pinned back, outplaying them in all areas and creating enough chances to win two matches. But for all their effort and attacking intent, they were left to rue missed opportunities and cruel fortune.
The game began with Clydebank firmly on the front foot, pressing high and harrying a shaky Fife defence on a heavy, rain-soaked surface. After a series of chances and saves from visiting keeper Billy McGann, the breakthrough came in the 34th minute. Russell latched onto a cross and fired home with his left foot to give the Bankies a deserved lead.
Just five minutes later, they had a golden chance to double their advantage when awarded a penalty. But Moy, usually reliable from the spot, saw his effort go astray. East Fife were hanging on by a thread and could count themselves extremely fortunate to reach the interval just a goal behind.
The visitors improved slightly after the break, perhaps stirred by manager Bonthrone’s half-time words, and they drew level almost immediately. Just two minutes into the second half, a neat move involving Christie and Kinsella ended with Rutherford prodding home the equaliser.
Clydebank responded well and retook the lead in the 56th minute, Moy atoning for his earlier miss with a composed finish past McGann. At that point, the Bankies looked well-placed to finally seal a victory.
But as the match wore on, the heavy conditions began to sap Clydebank’s energy, and East Fife slowly gained a foothold. With fifteen minutes to play, fortune turned dramatically. George Christie let fly from distance, and the ball cannoned off Rutherford’s knees and into the net, leaving even the scorer baffled. It was an astonishing stroke of luck, and it shifted the momentum entirely.
Just five minutes from time, Rutherford popped up again, this time turning in a cross to make it 3–2 and seal the win for the visitors—his second of the night, and third in two games against Clydebank.
The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for the Bankies, who had done enough to win comfortably. Their performance merited much more, and there were strong showings throughout the side. Yet once again, they were undone by a mix of misfortune and late lapses.
East Fife, to their credit, took their chances when they came and returned to Methil with the points. But even their own supporters would admit this was a smash-and-grab job of the highest order.
