Match Report

Sunday Post

With Recreation Park churned into a quagmire, Clydebank surmounted the conditions for a well-deserved win.

Caskie made all three of their goals, Kane scoring the first two in the 10th and 21st minute. Hall, who was substituted for Munro, prodded the ball past Gray 12 minutes after the restart for number three.

Alloa's only goal came in the 40th minute from Cunningham.

Alloa Adertiser

The Wasps supporters were disappointed at the result but in my mind they fell to the better team. A team that had thought in the their play and method in the execution.

The forwards interchanged positions so often, especially on the right, that Alloa's flank was torn to shreds.

Caskie had No. 11 on his jersey but more often he was to be found in the outside-right position and it was from there that he created all the havoc and also engineered the visitors' goals.

And Peter Kane was roaming all over the place but the ball always seemed to be projected in his direction.

This had an unsettling effect on the Alloa defence as a whole and throughout the entire game they never seemed to conjure up an answer.

There can be no doubt in my mind that these moves had been well thought out and practised until the players knew where to place the ball without having to look up before delivering the pass.

And the forwards were backed up by good midfield players and sterling defenders. I would say this was no disgrace for the Wasps to lose to such a team as what they lacked in teamwork they tried to balance the deficit by displaying any amount of fight.

But it was just not to be. The home forwards never moved with the cohesion of the visitors' quintet and had an off-day.

Mind you the defence tried to stem the tide with George Brown giving his usual powerful display as pivot and Richard Gray continued to show that he is a 'keeper of high merit. And the others had their moments but it required more than that to turn the tide.

I would go as far as to say that there has not been a better footballing team seen at the Recs this season and good luck to the Steedman brothers who are at the helm.

They could feel proud of their boys and I am sure some of the promotion candidates are going to receive a shock when they meet this young and virile team. They will be no pushover.

Alloa could take a few lessons out of the game and could profit in the future. What Clydebank can do the Wasps can emulate and who knows, maybe better.

But one thing I will say, this game was always interesting and had many good incidents.

During the first ten minutes the play was featureless on sodden surface.

If anything Clydebank had the better of that opening phase and it was just closing when they went ahead with a slick goal from Kane who turned a deftly-directed Caskie pass well clear of Gray.

Alloa tried hard to improve their position and left-back Gray had to kick off the line with McDonald beaten. Next minute the keeper saved in great style from Wodecki.

But Clydebank (who had replaced Munro with Hall) had their own well-trusted success formula. The second goal which came along in the 24th minute was an almost exact replica of the first-Kane the scorer and Caskie the real man of menace.

Alloa fought back strongly but the battle in the mud had reached the 40th minute before a beautifully-flighted Marshall cross was headed in by Cunningham.

A minute later Marshall was again showing his paces-a fine run on the right (and cross-country) leading to a 20-yard rocket left-footer which just cleared the near post.

Clydebank were first to show on the restart and Gray had to move fast to cover a skidding grounder from Hay.

Alloa hit back and after clever play on their left-wing the ball went to Thomson whose rocket 20-yarder hit the angle of post and cross-bar.

A gesture in which the inches mean so much!

Clydebank, meanwhile, though their attacks were well spaced, always seemed to carry a greater menace. And in the 57th minute they struck again when that man Caskie sent through to Hall who gave Gray no chance from close range.

The goal had a depressing ring of finality-though it was quickly followed by a "move" at least-Campbell came on for Allan in the home set-up. And Alloa should have celebrated minutes later-but McCallan's 15-yarder stuck in the mud after beating the keeper!

It was an episode which proved all too typical of the negative result of Alloa effort and some time later it was confirmed that the home men had indeed shot their bolt.
