Match Report

Clydebank's Premier League fitness paid dividends on Wednesday night when they outgunned a plucky East Fife side who were always willing to have a go but were bereft of ideas.

The result virtually assures Clydebank a place in the second round, where they will play either Alloa or Stranraer.

It took Bankies until the 22nd minute to break the deadlock, and even then it was through an own goal by Smith.

Lumsden passed to Larnach who crossed low and hard into the goalmouth. Smith tried to hook the ball clear but it spun off his thigh into the net.
McColl nearly made it two five minutes later when he sent in a fine 20-yarder that Blair did well to stop.

Then came the goal of the game from Joe McCallan. Again it was Larnach who did the leading up; he passed to McCallan who-although caged in by three defenders-pivoted round as if on a swivel and poked the ball out of Blair's reach.

After the interval it was all Clydebank although Jim Gallacher did have to make one smart save from a Markie pot-shot.

Houston, who was playing like a veteran, set up Bankies' third goal. He sent through a lovely ball to Billy McColl who-calm as you. Like side-footed it past Blair from 15 yards.

Only a minute later McColl scored again. This time he got the ball from Lumsden and lobbed it over the advancing 'keeper.

Mike Larnach completed the rout when with a minute to go he netted from an acute angle after some great work on the right by McCallan. If ever Mike deserved a goal it was here, for he ran, hounded and harried for the entire 90 minutes.

The second leg takes place on Wednesday at Methil-but it should be a mere formality.
