Match Report

Strikers Blair Millar and Tommy Coyne sealed fourth place in the table for Bankies in their final league match. Needing only a point to stay ahead of Ayr, Clydebank made sure of their league placing with a goal in each half.

Minus Gerry Ronald, who failed a fitness test, and the suspended Gerry McCabe, Clydebank brought in Bobby Williamson and Campbell McKeown.

Both played well, and one of next season's most interesting features will be whether or not Williamson can continue the progress he's made in the past few months.

At full-back, in midfield and, on Saturday, on the right wing, his play has been a revelation. Had he been in the side from the start of the season, Bankies might just have gained that certain something they lacked in the early months.

His corner led to the second goal of the game. Jim Given got his head to the cross, flicked the ball on and with the defence watching Blair Millar, Tommy Coyne nipped in to head past Jim Brown.

The big keeper has certainly suffered since that infamous day last season when, as a Kilmarnock debutant, he picked the ball out of the net eight times against Rangers.

His positioning on Saturday was suspect, and he seems to have lost a great deal of confidence since the TV cameras captured his every blunder against Rangers.

He could do little about Bankies first goal, though. That came after a brilliant move down the right, with Coyne, Williamson and McKeown combining to let the former in for a shot. His low drive came back off the post, and Millar was on the e spot to tap home.

That was right on the stroke of half-time, and when Coyne made it 2-0 13 minutes after the break, that was that. Bankies never really had to stretch themselves to beat United, and they could in fact have stepped up the pace enough to add to their total.

However, 2-0 it was and that was good enough. Fourth place in the table is just about right for Bankies, for they were just that much behind Motherwell, Kilmarnock and Hearts in consistency, and ahead of the rest of the league in ability.
