Match Report

Clydebank Press

Bankies came out winners against Alloa at Recreation Park on Saturday in rather a dull game. The scoring chances were there but neither team took full advantage. Douglas Hay got the winner for Bankies when he blasted the ball in from 35 yards past a bewildered home keeper.

Young Hay took a knock on Saturday but it is expected he will be fit for tomorrow's game against Brechin City at Kilbowie. Brechin have had a good run recently and are a team that Bankies will have to watch.

Malcolm Henderson was taken off four minutes from time with a back injury but he should be alright for tomorrow also.

In an interview with Jack Steedman this week I tried to clear up the "transfer controversy" that was highlighted in the daily Press last week.

Jack tells me that it is true that all the players are eligible for transfer and this will be the practice until Bankies go full-time.

They will not stand in any player's way as long as they are well compensated.

The club are delighted that they are now in the top six, equal with Queen of the South. Three of the nine games they have yet to play are with tough opponents-St. Mirren, next Saturday, East Fife and Queen of the South.

Mr. Steedman reckons that another two seasons and Bankies will be in a position to fear no one in the Second Division.

This week the club had talks with two young players in an effort to sign them as part of their build-up of youth players.

Alloa Advertiser

To be an out-and-out football supporter you have to be prepared to take the good with the bad without flinching. Saturday was a day for the bad. Neither the Wasps nor Clydebank had the ability to raise the game above mediocrity and the 400 spectators were sorely tried as a result. Good forward play was at a premium: neither team seeming to possess a man who could touch off a sparkle of genius that would cause a ripple of excitement on the terracing with the result that the game went on and on at the same tempo and pattern for the full ninety minutes. Clydebank eventually took both points through a rather fortuitous goal from Hay but I am sure the Steedman Bros. consider it a rather hollow victory.

I would put this down as the worst display from the Alloa forwards this season, The regulars all played below form and the only one of the quintette to escape criticism was the Junior fielded at inside-left. This young man had the right ideas. He could use the ball intelligently and was full of running. He laid on several chances for the others which should have been turned to better use but there were no takers. The only blemish in his make-up that I could see was that he did not lavish enough service to his wing partner. He was inclined to play mainly through the middle of the field. The result was that the Newman fielded did not get enough opportunity to show his wares.

But at least Junior did prove that he was worth further consideration. As for the others they will want to forget this game. They never rose above mediocrity although I can re-collect one great shot from Jim Cleminson from fully twenty-five yards which brought out a great save from 'keeper Madden. If this shot had counted it might have given Jim the urge to go on to greater things as he has yet to produce the goalscoring flair he had when with St. Andrews United.

Jim Brennan and Campbell Walker were no more successful. They were held on a tight rein by the Clydebank defenders and did not seem to possess the ability to break the shackles. If only they had played as well as the rear six a different story would have been unfolded. They were all good without being brilliant; they didn't require to be, so inept were the Clydebank forwards. They were no better or worse than the Alloa quintette. Only Moy and to a lesser degree, Caskie, showed any ability.

No wonder the game was so bad. Forwards have to be on top to add that touch of excitement to the game. And that was conspicuous by its absence. What little more can be said about this game. Only that the visitors won by the only goal scored and to my way of thinking a rather fortuitous one it was.
