Dismal, dull, grey, and muddy. That was Kilbowie Park on Monday when a defensive blunder cost the Bankies a much needed point during the customary Ne’erday fetish.
But Jack Steedman rang in the New Year with four team debutants for Clydebank. Thorrup, McCallan, Benny McGuire and Jim Docherty all trooped out under the lights to provide the 500 or so hardy annuals with tactical interest.
Joe McCallan was in a hurry to prove his value and with four minutes gone was unlucky to be blocked out from dangerously close in.
Jimmy Caskie worked hard down the left wing but nothing went right for him. He provided several good chances which nobody was awake enough to use.
Clydebank were on top in the early stages and the volume of noise coming from both sides must surely have shattered many a fragile head.
Shire's keeper again justified his presence after 18 minutes when industrious Billy McColl unleashed a strong 30-yarder. The Bankies were moving the ball about well and showing poise.
Then followed a period of determined East Stirling pressure, Jim Gallacher had a fraught moment in the 28th minute when Robertson's attempt cannoned off his body.
Two minutes on and indecision between Norrie Hall and Gallacher ended with the keeper grounding winger Robertson. Browning executed the penalty and Clydebank were one down.
Thankfully this incident provoked a positive reaction from the Bankie ranks. Most of the traffic headed towards the Shire end and Mike Larnach stunned Archibald with a deadly long shot to draw things level three minutes before the interval.
McCallan started the second half like the first, only Archibald's alertness saving the situation. Shire were eager to re-establish their lead but haste and impatience were their biggest problems.
Norrie Hall almost covered himself in despondency as well as mud when he whipped the ball back to Gallacher and watched it slither narrowly past the post.
Gallacher deserves praise for some brave recoveries from the feet of attackers and all too often his defence threshed ineptly about in the mud.
Petty fowling was prevalent and broke the flow of action. As a result -a degree of scrappiness crept in as the game neared its end.
It was not Jimmy Caskie's best day and with time running out he failed to capitalise on a beautiful through ball from McColl in front of goal.
It's difficult to make any profound judgements on this game except that the new quartet fitted in without any traumas. Joe McCallan in particular has a natural attacking flair.
