Match Report

The 87-minute men. That's Queen's Park or so their fans could be forgiven for thinking. For in both league matches with Clydebank this season, they have seen their team throw the match away in the last three minutes.

in August, at Hampden Bankies clawed their way back from being two goals down to grab a point. And, at Kilbowie on Saturday, Jim Given's close range drive from an Atkins' clearance gave them full points.

Better than that, though, the midfielder's third goal of the season lifted Clydebank into joint third place in the table, just behind Hearts on goal difference.

This, though, was a far from convincing performance from the Kilbowie men. After a rip-roaring start when it looked as if the Spiders would be tied up by Bankies' web of attacking football, they were let off the hook, and could well have got at least a point out of the game.

In the end Clydebank took the points, but this was not a game the fans will remember for a long time to come.

Campbell McKeown opened the scoring in 22 minutes after as fine a move as I have seen all season. Ronald started it all, dragging the ball across the centre of the field, playing a one-two with McKeown and finding Given.

The blond-haired number six put Gerry McCabe away, and although he looked as if he had over-run the ball, still managed to send over a brilliant cross.

But rather than press home their obvious advantage over the amateurs, Bankies sat back and tried to play about in midfield. Queen's fought back, and came from behind to snatch a deserved equaliser just before the break.

Tom Coyne gave the ball away on the edge of the Queen's box and from the clearance, Woods, a tireless worker all afternoon, raced clear, found Gilmour, whose flick was swept home by Lex Grant.

The second half? Ask any of the 904 who bothered to turn up. Both sides struggled to put together any sort of football, with Clydebank obviously finding it hard to regain the momentum of the first half-hour.

But it was Queen's centre- half John McGregor who had the best chance to win the points. In a packed penalty box a high ball dropped between the blond number five and Jim Gallacher. As the Kilbowie faithful held their breath, McGregor could do no more than kick the keeper and put the ball wide.

Bankies heaved a sigh of relief, dusted themselves down, and scored. It was all so simple. Fallon chipped, Millar back-headed. Atkins punched straight to Given and he slammed the ball home.

And that was that.
