Match Report

Clydebank's promotion hopes took a dive at Kilbowie on Wednesday night, when lowly Raith Rovers sneaked a late winner.

The Kirkcaldy side finally overcame the Clydebank jinx which cost them promotion last season with a goal five minutes from time.

Former Hearts and Partick Thistle striker Willie Gibson found space to flick a neat header past Jim Gallacher from a Mitchell corner.

Bankies surprisingly left on-form Davie Houston on the bench yet again and brought back Gerry Ronald in favour of Bobby Williamson, who played in the win over East Stirling.

Houston's subtle touches were sadly missed and it was a dismal night all round for a Bankies side struggling to rediscover their pre-Christmas form. Ironically it was the fullbacks who gave the game its few bright moments. Mark Treanor hit a raging drive just wide of the post and then forced Rovers 'keeper Ally Donaldson into a wonderful save after half an hour.

In the second half, Raith defender McDonough came close several times and 'keeper Jim Gallacher made the save of the night when he turned the full-back's 30-yard shot wide of the post.

As the frustrated Bankies pushed forward for the elusive winner, Raith looked more and more capable of grabbing a late goal.

And their patience was rewarded in the 85th minute when That Willie Gibson goal shocked the 500 home fans and gave Bankies their second defeat in three league games.

Rivals Ayr United moved level on points on Wednesday, when they struggled to a disappointing 0-0 draw at Dunfermline. But United, Bankies' opponents tomorrow, still have two precious matches in hand.
