Match Report

Huge sighs of relief echoed around Kilbowie Park on Saturday after the Bankies notched up their first league win of 1981.

And it was a tale of two teams. For the two points keep Clydebank away from the relegation zone while virtually condemning Berwick to Second Division football next season.

An on-song Blair Millar secured the victory with two super goals. In fact, Clydebank's last win was Over Rangers on December 6.

It was a dull meeting of two sides with little at stake and a crowd of only 120 watched in pouring rain.

The home men opened aggressively and, in the fifth minute, Tom McGorm raced up the right flank on a piercing run. He cut back to Dave Houston in the box, but his shot was off target.

Then Davidson worked well on the left before crossing to McGlynn who had acres of space in front of goal. But 'keeper Jim Gallacher easily held his weak header.

In 18 minutes Jim Given cleverly chipped a free-kick into the penalty area where McGorm hooked a fierce shot at goal. It crashed off the underside of the bar before Millar lashed the ball home to open the scoring.

Millar unleashed a great upfield ball to Gerry Ronald, but he wasted time before putting his 12-yard effort wide.

Millar was again in action in the 26th minute when he came close following a display of close control. He lobbed the ball which scraped the bar.

In the 28th minute that man Miller struck again. He latched on to a Gerry McCabe low cross from the right and volleyed the ball past McDonald in the Berwick goal.

Then Gallacher came to Clydebank's rescue, brilliantly holding a Tait shot at his left hand post.

In the 42nd minute a Muir effort sped narrowly past the upright

After the break McCabe linked well with Houston and his 20-yard volley was smothered by the 'keeper.

In the 59th minute Barry Evans sent an intelligent ball to McGorm who wriggled his way past four defenders on the edge of the box before firing in a shot which went inches wide.

Berwick's chances of saving the match had dwindled and their best chance came in 78 minutes when a Tait drive crashed off the bar before being cleared.
