Match Report

WANTED, for assault with a deadly weapon - Airdrieonians Football Club. The victim? Clydebank Football Club. The weapon? A football.

The attack took place between the hours of 7.30 and 9.10 p.m. on the evening of Wednesday, September 22, in one of the quietest parts of Clydebank, known as Kilbowie Park.

Posing as friendly visitors from another county, and ironically dressed in blood red, Airdrie, as the murderers are known, unleashed a fury rarely seen in the area.

Clydebank had been proceeding in an upwards direction, having by-passed Dumbarton and Clyde, but were stopped in their tracks by a series of sudden blows.

The attackers are believed to have used a former friend and colleague of the victim, one Blair Millar, to distract their attention, before an unlikely hit man known as Jim March dealt the first real blow.

Attempts at retaliation proved fruitless, and after withstanding some strong counter-attacks, the raiders struck with three more killer strikes.

Eventually, Clydebank called for help, in the shape of local youngsters Campbell McKeown and Eddie Sinclair, but they too were dragged into the mauling.

Following the shocking attack, all the suspects made off quickly, but several by-standers spoke of one Bill Munro, said to have left the ground with a wide grin on his face.

Reaction from onlookers ranged from shock to utter disgust. Several people spoke of the ease with which Clydebank were slaughtered, and asked for an immediate inquiry.
