Match Report

The Don Howe's of this world would have locked the teams in their dressing-rooms and given them a right good talking to on defensive discipline. Me? I'd have given them all a bonus and Monday night off from training.

Both sides more than earned it in a game which brought a smile to the fans' faces - even those of the Clyde supporters baying for boss Craig Brown's head.

Bankies notched up their second five-goal win in four days with a display which had just about everything . . . including just enough mistakes to keep the fans on their toes.

In a first half which teetered between the ridiculous and the even more ridiculous, there could easily have been many more than the six goals we did see.

Only two - Bobby Williamson's 20-yarder and a Gerry Ronald header from a move carved with breath-taking simplicity - weren't the result of errors in defence.

Billy McLaren, another fading star, passed the ball back to Clark a shade too hard. But after letting it through his fingers, the veteran keeper should still have seen Tom Coyne nipping in behind him. The young number 10 wasted no time in poking the ball home.

Five minutes later, Jim Gallacher stood horrified as a McCutcheon shot hit his body and spun away into the corner of the net. Minutes after that a high free-kick left the whole defence standing and Reilly flicked in between the post and Gallacher's prostrate body.

But funnily enough, there never seemed any danger of Bankies losing, and 30 seconds later Martin Hughes - still developing with every match into a fine young player - gleefully slammed home a Williamson shot which came off the upright.

Williamson then got into the scoring act, picking up a Ronald lay-off to shoot home from 20 yards.

Ronald's goal, near the break, had the Bankies fans enraptured and the home following applauding in grudging approval.

That should have been that, but McCutcheon - target of the Shawfield boo-boys, as were most of his team-mates, it should be added - rose to head home early in the second half when Bankies again left a through ball to each other.

However, another Clark mistake let a Bobby Williamson drive in near the end, and Clydebank got the victory they deserved.

But Saturday's game was all about goals, fun and skill in every department... and that can't be a bad thing.
